Enter the MotoKey Plus app, an unofficial tool that empowers users to take control of their AI key.

MotoKey Plus transforms the AI key into a fully programmable shortcut button, allowing for a variety of actions based on different press types. With the latest update, users can now assign unique functions to single presses, double presses, and press-and-hold actions. This enhancement is made possible through hardware-level routing, which effectively overrides Motorola’s default settings to prevent any conflicts.
The app opens a world of possibilities for users. Actions that can be assigned include:
- Launching the flashlight
- Taking screenshots
- Controlling media playback
- Accessing notifications and Quick Settings
- Using Gemini and Google Lens
- Launching any app of choice
Moreover, users can fine-tune the responsiveness of their AI key by adjusting the double-tap timing between 250ms and 500ms, and the hold threshold from 300ms to 800ms. This level of customization is something that Motorola’s stock implementation lacks, which primarily restricts the AI key to specific AI functions or renders it inactive.
Feedback from early adopters on Reddit has been largely positive, with reports of successful functionality across various models, including the Edge 60 Pro, Edge 70 Pro, and the Razr Ultra 2025. However, some users have encountered challenges, particularly with the mute function not always performing as expected.
Despite its promise, MotoKey Plus is currently available only through sideloading and is not yet open source. The developer has indicated plans for a Google Play release within the next month, which could broaden accessibility. The current version listed on GitHub is 1.1.1, while the project’s Telegram channel has already progressed to version 1.1.7, which includes fixes for press-and-hold behavior on newer firmware.
