Google Wallet for Android adds 12th digital state ID

In a significant advancement for digital identification, Google Wallet has recently expanded its offerings to include support for Oklahoma state IDs on Android devices. This move follows the platform’s last major update at the end of August and marks Oklahoma as the 13th state to join the ranks of digital ID options available through Google Wallet.

Seamless Integration for Users

To access this feature, users can simply open the Google Wallet app on their smartphones and tap the ‘plus’ button located next to “View more” at the bottom of the screen. From there, they can navigate to IDs & personal info and select Driver’s license or state ID. The new Oklahoma ID design features iconic symbols of the state, including the American Bison, representing the state animal, and the scissor-tailed flycatcher, the state bird.

The setup process is straightforward yet secure. Users will need to capture photos of both the front and back of their physical ID cards, along with a brief video of their face for verification purposes. This information is sent to the State of Oklahoma (SOK) for review, which typically takes just a few minutes. Once approved, users will receive a notification confirming the availability of their digital ID, accompanied by an email from the state agency.

Sharing Your Digital ID

When it comes to sharing your digital ID, the process is designed with privacy in mind. Here’s how it works:

  • First, tap on the reader or scan your QR code: At this stage, your personal information remains private.
  • Next, review what information will be shared: Ensure you are comfortable with the data being requested.
  • You don’t need to hand your phone to anyone: Your ID is securely transmitted via Bluetooth, so make sure this feature is enabled.
  • Lastly, verify your identity: For added security, confirm that the ID belongs to you using facial recognition, fingerprint, password, or PIN.

For those interested in tracking their usage, the “Details” option next to “Show code” allows users to enable an “Activity history.” Additionally, the “Driver’s License information” section provides essential details such as the license number, expiration date, and address.

Important Considerations

While the digital ID can be read via NFC technology or by scanning a QR code, it is important to note that it is currently accepted at select airports by the TSA. However, users are still required to carry their physical ID cards, as the digital version does not replace this necessity.

To utilize this feature, users must have an Android device running version 8 or higher, with a screen lock enabled, as well as Bluetooth and Nearby devices activated. If needed, a state ID can be deleted from Google Wallet at any time or remotely via myaccount.google.com. As a private pass, the digital ID does not sync to the cloud and is accessible solely on one device.

  1. Tap Personal Info.
  2. Scroll to “Digital ID.”
  3. Tap Manage Digital ID.
  4. Next to the ID or license you wish to remove, tap Delete.
  5. Confirm your decision to delete the ID from your device and Google Account.
