Among the innovative features introduced with the Google Pixel 11 series is HiLight, a striking array of eight multicolor LEDs located on the back of the Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold. While this feature is intriguing, its functionality at launch is somewhat limited. HiLight primarily serves two purposes: it illuminates one of five colors when a designated favorite contact calls, and it activates when the Gemini voice assistant is in use. However, the simplicity of these functions may leave some users wanting more.
For those who appreciate the concept of using HiLight to identify incoming calls, the current setup allows customization for only five contacts. Beyond that, the potential for color confusion arises. Fortunately, a free and open-source application named HiLight Studio has emerged, designed to enhance user control over the LED lights. Developed by Dhananjay Bhosale and available on GitHub, this app is now also accessible for open testing on the Google Play Store, allowing users to download it effortlessly from a trusted source without any sign-up requirements.
Getting Started with HiLight Studio
For users who may feel apprehensive about the technicalities of rooting their Android devices, the process of setting up HiLight Studio is surprisingly straightforward. The Shizuku app, which facilitates this setup, is readily available on the Google Play Store, eliminating the need for sideloading any applications. To embark on this journey, users can follow these simple steps:
- Open the Settings app on your Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, or Pixel 11 Pro Fold.
- Scroll down to the About phone section and tap it.
- Locate the Build number and tap it seven times to enable developer options. A device passcode will be required to confirm this change.
Upon experiencing HiLight for the first time, users may quickly recognize its untapped potential. Regrettably, the current implementation by Google does not fully leverage this capability, as the two officially supported use cases do not significantly alter the user experience. However, with the introduction of HiLight Studio, there is an opportunity for users to explore and expand the functionality of this feature, making it a worthwhile addition to any new Pixel device. With hopes that Google will eventually enhance HiLight’s native capabilities, the future looks promising for this innovative feature.
