I enabled Windows 11’s drive compression and got over 60GB back without slowing down my PC

Running out of space on a PC can be a source of frustration, especially for those who opt for budget-friendly laptops. In 2026, with storage and RAM prices soaring, the allure of saving money can lead to sacrifices that become apparent later. However, Windows 11 offers a hidden gem that can alleviate this issue: file compression. This feature allows users to compress files on their drives, freeing up valuable space without compromising usability. After enabling this feature, I was pleasantly surprised to reclaim a significant amount of storage.

NTFS Drive Compression Can Save a Lot of Space

Many are familiar with compressing files into archives for easier sharing, but Windows 11’s NTFS compression operates differently. It compresses files seamlessly in the background, allowing users to access them without the need for manual extraction. This behind-the-scenes magic means that while files take up less space, they remain fully functional and accessible. To enable this feature, simply open File Explorer, navigate to This PC, right-click on the desired drive, and select Properties. If the drive uses the NTFS file system, an option to compress files will be available at the bottom of the Properties window.

Depending on the amount of data already stored, the compression process can take some time. For instance, when I activated it on my laptop with 333GB of data, Windows estimated a lengthy nine-hour process, but it completed in about two hours. It’s important to note that some essential system files may not be compressible.

It’s Not Without Downsides

While drive compression offers clear advantages, it does come with some drawbacks. Each file must be compressed before being written and decompressed upon access, which can consume CPU resources. This may result in slightly longer loading times for files. However, on most modern computers, this impact is minimal and often goes unnoticed. For older or slower PCs, users may want to consider whether the benefits of compression outweigh any potential slowdowns.

You Can Compress Select Files or Folders

For those concerned about performance, it’s worth noting that compression doesn’t have to apply to an entire drive. Users can selectively compress specific files or folders that don’t require high access speeds. This approach can yield significant space savings without affecting overall performance. To compress a folder, simply access the Advanced options in the properties dialog. Additionally, users can choose whether to apply compression to subfolders, providing greater control over what gets compressed.

In an age where storage costs are escalating, reclaiming space on your PC is more crucial than ever. Windows 11’s drive compression feature presents an accessible solution that minimizes impact on user experience. While the process of compressing and decompressing files may take some time, the efficiency of modern computers ensures that users will hardly notice any difference in performance.
