Stormgate developers say they want to lower the RTS skill floor, not the skill ceiling: ‘It’s okay to be a high-skill game’

Stormgate: A New Generation of RTS

At the PC Gaming Show in June, a documentary was showcased about Stormgate, a new real-time strategy game developed by former Blizzard developers. The documentary, filmed at Frost Giant Studios in Orange County, is now available to watch in full. Frost Giant president Tim Campbell describes Stormgate as “a love letter to the history of real-time strategy,” emphasizing the team’s commitment to innovating within the traditional Blizzard-style RTS genre.

The factions in Stormgate reflect Frost Giant’s dedication to blending RTS tradition with original gameplay design. The human Vanguard resemble Starcraft’s Terrans, while the Infernal Host have a demonic twist akin to the Zerg from Diablo. The Celestial Armada, however, breaks the Starcraft mold with a unique playstyle.

The Celestials, a technologically-advanced alien race, start matches with a mobile HQ structure that moves freely across the map. Instead of using builder units, the Celestials’ HQ can deploy structures from the armada above, offering a different approach to base-building. With a full supply cap from the start, Celestials encourage early map exploration and strategic expansion.

According to Campbell, Stormgate challenges players to think outside the typical build order, promoting dynamic gameplay and adaptability. The game is set to release in early access on July 30, 2024, promising a fresh take on the RTS genre.
