Apple removed the offline messaging application Bitchat from its India App Store following a request from the Ministry of Information Technology. This decision was influenced by reports that demonstrators at Jantar Mantar used Bitchat to communicate during protests against alleged irregularities in competitive examinations amid internet restrictions. Bitchat is an open-source, decentralized messaging app that allows communication without mobile data or Wi-Fi, using Bluetooth Low Energy technology and ensuring privacy through end-to-end encryption. The app's removal halts new downloads and security updates, although it remains accessible on existing devices. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology invoked Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, to facilitate the takedown, citing national security and public order. The Internet Freedom Foundation criticized the removal as unconstitutional, arguing it infringes on free speech rights and called for transparency regarding the blocking order and rationale behind the action.

Wabi, an AI startup, has launched Wabi 2.0, a platform that serves as a sophisticated AI messenger while maintaining app-building capabilities. The founder, Eugenia Kuyda, describes Wabi 2.0 as a "personal agent" that enhances user experience by integrating conversation and task management. The platform distinguishes itself by targeting AI agents with conversational and productivity features, rather than competing with traditional coding tools. Users can request tasks that the agent fulfills by generating a tailored user interface for specific needs, such as health tracking or family management. In 2025, Sara Du identified challenges in integrating AI agents within communication platforms like Slack while assisting companies with MCP servers. She criticized the design of these platforms for treating AI agents as separate applications rather than team participants. Du proposed a solution to eliminate intermediaries between AI agents and teams, envisioning a system where agents could engage directly in conversations, understand decisions, ask questions, and autonomously notify humans when necessary. Du's startup, Ando, launched as a messaging platform that allows both human and AI workers to communicate seamlessly, featuring channels, direct messages, and live calls. Ando has raised a million in pre-seed and seed funding from firms like Accel and Index Ventures. Despite existing competition from platforms like Slack and Microsoft, Du sees potential for Ando to disrupt the market by focusing on AI agent integration. Currently, Ando works with clients in software, real estate, and finance across 15 countries, primarily small teams, and aims to expand its capabilities with the new funding.
