<span class="personstrapline”>Archive Spelunker<span class="personname”>Wes Fenlon revisits the nostalgic charm of 2006’s Sid Meier’s Railroads!, a title that not only celebrates the joy of trains but also embodies the exuberance of Sid Meier’s game design philosophy. The iconic exclamation point in the title is a testament to Meier’s enthusiasm for diverse themes, whether it be trains, pirates, or historical battles. While last year’s Civilization installment faced its share of challenges at launch, one can’t help but wonder if it would have resonated more had it embraced the same spirited punctuation—perhaps Sid Meier’s Civilization 7! would have captured the imagination more effectively.
The early 2000s marked a vibrant era for Firaxis, as they revitalized many of Meier’s classic strategy games from the ’80s and ’90s, transforming them into 3D experiences. Now, as these remakes age, both Pirates! and Railroads! seem ripe for another revival. Tim Edwards, in his retrospective, noted that Railroads! was “cruelly ignored upon release.” Yet, time appears to have been kind; even now, 108 players are actively engaging with the game on Steam, a statistic that certainly warrants an exclamation mark of its own.
Reinstall: Tim Edwards plays Sid Meier’s Railroads! and tracks his progress
In a surprising twist, I discovered my appreciation for business through the lens of competition, which mirrors the essence of gaming itself. This realization has led me to a newfound affection for railroads, specifically Sid Meier’s Railroads!. Sid Meier, renowned for his work on Civilization, Gettysburg, and even golf games, has established himself as a master designer. His ability to distill complex market dynamics into engaging gameplay mechanics is unmatched, allowing players to navigate through intricate interactions that mimic human behavior.
In single-player mode, the AI in Railroads! adeptly exploits these interactions, orchestrating auctions that challenge your financial limits and strategically annexing vital industries. The multiplayer experience, on the other hand, oscillates between light-hearted banter and fierce rivalry, creating a unique blend of camaraderie and competition.
However, Railroads! is not without its flaws. Persistent routing bugs have plagued the game since its inception, occasionally leaving trains stranded at junctions. Moreover, the game could greatly benefit from an intuitive level editor and fresh scenarios to enhance its replayability. Despite these shortcomings, it remains a compelling test of business acumen, offering a rare opportunity to conclude a session with the triumphant declaration, “I do actually own yo’ asses. Now fetch me tea.”
