Jason Momoa has recently shared exciting news regarding the much-anticipated A Minecraft Movie 2. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, he confirmed that filming is set to commence at the end of April 2026. This announcement marks a significant milestone for the sequel, which was initially reported to be in development back in April 2025, coinciding with the theatrical release of its predecessor.

Momoa expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating that the script for the sequel is “even better” than the first film, which he admitted had left him somewhat perplexed. “It’s so good. I was laughing out loud,” he remarked, highlighting the script’s ability to evoke genuine laughter—a rare occurrence for him in recent times.
The sequel is slated for a theatrical release on July 23, 2027, with Jared Hess returning to direct. Hess will collaborate with Chris Galletta on the screenplay, continuing the creative legacy established in the first film, which also involved contributions from Chris Bowman, Gavin James, Hubbel Palmer, and Neil Widener.
Legendary Pictures, the studio behind the original film, will reprise its role as both producer and financier for this sequel. The production team will include notable figures such as Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, and Momoa himself, alongside Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, and Torfi Frans Ólaffson.
In terms of casting, Momoa will return as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, with Jack Black expected to reprise his role as Steve. However, the status of other main cast members from the first film, including Emma Meyers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge, remains uncertain at this time.
While Warner Bros. has kept specific details under wraps since the sequel’s announcement, Hess hinted to Deadline that the storyline may explore the dynamic between Steve and his female counterpart, Alex, who was teased in the post-credits scene of the original film. As anticipation builds, fans eagerly await further developments from the creative team as they delve deeper into the world of Minecraft.
