A Saints Row prequel going “back to its roots” might actually happen, as its original director works on a pitch “to get the band back together”

The original director of Saints Row, Chris Stockman, has ignited a flicker of excitement among fans with his recent announcement regarding a potential prequel. Having initially served as the design director for the first installment at Volition, Stockman later established his own independent studio, Bit Planet Games. In a conversation with PCGamesN, he expressed his ambition to “get the band back together,” although he acknowledged that the project remains in its early stages.

Reviving a Classic

In a post on the game’s Reddit page, Stockman revealed, “I’ve been asked to create a pitch for a Saints Row prequel.” He added, “I can’t say anything more than that but my dreams for this game just became a little more than just dreams.” When contacted for further details, he reiterated his focus on crafting a prequel while maintaining a sense of mystery about the project. “I won’t say much beyond that yet as I want to keep my cards close to my chest, for now,” he remarked.

Stockman’s journey to this point began after an interview with Esports Insider sparked interest in his vision for the franchise. He reached out to the current IP holder, Embracer Group, following his comments that questioned the direction of the series. “It wasn’t Saints Row at all,” he stated, lamenting the absence of beloved characters that defined the original games.

With a clear intent to return the franchise to its roots, Stockman emphasized, “I directed Saints Row 1 and I feel the series has strayed way too far away from that. I completely understand why they went that way, but in the end, they kind of painted themselves into a corner they couldn’t get out of.” While he acknowledged the enjoyment of titles like Saints Row The Third, he noted that the series may have ventured too far down a path of relentless escalation.

Although it is premature to raise expectations, Stockman remains optimistic. “There is interest. A pitch has been requested,” he confirmed. “I am attempting to get the band back together. If this works, this will be an amazing story. I hope it works!”

A potential revival of Saints Row could serve as a fitting counterpart to the anticipated release of GTA 6. In the meantime, gamers can explore a variety of other engaging crime-themed titles to satisfy their cravings.
