Android 17 to offer a literal game changer for foldable phones – and now we’re in the market for a Pixel Fold

Google Unveils Foldable Gaming Mode for Android 17

Google has given a glimpse of a new foldable gaming mode that will be introduced in Android 17, sparking interest in the adoption of foldable phones as the next handset choice.

The innovative mode will divide the display of a book-style foldable device evenly, with the game displayed on the top screen and a virtual gamepad on the bottom screen. This design aligns with the essence of foldable phones and is a welcome addition to the Android platform.

The announcement was made by Android’s Community Engagement Manager, Mishaal Rahman, who showcased the feature on Reddit. The foldable gaming mode is expected to enhance the gaming experience on devices like the Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7.

Rahman explained that the virtual gamepad will be compatible with all games that support physical controllers, featuring standard buttons such as D-pad, thumbsticks, ABXY action buttons, and L-R 1-3 buttons. Users will also have the option to customize the layouts and haptic feedback settings.

Speaking about the new feature, Rahman stated, “Foldable gaming mode maximizes the screen real estate of foldable devices, providing an immersive gaming experience. By enabling this mode, users can enjoy a full game view on the top screen and a dedicated virtual gamepad on the bottom screen.”

One of the key highlights of the feature is that developers will not need to make any adjustments to support it. Rahman confirmed that if a game already supports physical gamepads and has an adaptive UI, the foldable gaming mode will seamlessly integrate with it without any additional developer input.

While Pixel Phones are already running a stable version of Android 17, the foldable gaming mode will be rolled out in the upcoming months, according to Rahman.
