Google Play Changes May Render Daggerfall Unity Android Unplayable
Daggerfall Unity Android is an app which requires being sideloaded using an APK, essentially meaning it isn’t installed using the Google Play store. However, this is going to become a problem in the coming weeks and months following a new Android shakeup.
Last year, Google announced that it will be phasing out sideloading apps from unverified developers on Android devices, encouraging them to use the Google Play store.
Given that one of the biggest appeals of using Android over iOS was the freedom to sideload apps whenever you wanted to, this move has attracted a lot of criticism from developers and users.
As the game is not an official project from Bethesda, Daggerfall Unity Android cannot be published on the Google Play Store for copyright reasons. It also can’t be emulated via a Rom, making sideloading the app the best way to play the game on mobile.
However, with these changes, it would effectively kill off the game on mobile. That is, unless Google is able to provide some clarity over whether it’ll allow sideloading apps under certain circumstances.
The decision to phase out sideloading apps has been a controversial one, and developers have been putting pressure on Google to reverse that decision. It seems that the ability to sideload apps is still available, but may not be for much longer.
