Arc Raiders is looking for ‘more ways to integrate real human performances’ starting with Celeste’s visual overhaul for Frozen Trail

Embark is currently undertaking an extensive overhaul as it prepares for the highly anticipated update of Arc Raiders, titled Frozen Trail. This initiative encompasses a significant revamp of its anti-cheat measures, the introduction of a potential PvE test, and adjustments to loot hotspots. Among these changes, one of the most notable is the reimagining of Celeste, a pivotal character in the game.

Character Rework and Performance Enhancement

Diana Gardner, who has lent her voice to Celeste, the unofficial leader of Speranza, since the game’s inception, is at the heart of this transformation. Stefan Strandberg, Embark’s chief creative officer, articulated in a recent blog post that Celeste has not fully captured the depth of Gardner’s performance. He noted that the character’s “limited expressive capabilities” have hindered the immersive experience for players, failing to convey the “stakes and stories we want to tell.”

Strandberg emphasized the importance of high-fidelity, dynamic facial expressions in anchoring the narrative’s gravity. He acknowledged that this aspect has constrained the storytelling potential up to this point. The previous designs, while visually appealing, often felt more like quest-giving machines than authentic citizens of the game world. This disconnect was further exacerbated by the reliance on AI to enhance voice lines, which detracted from the overall engagement.

In response to these challenges, Embark is committed to integrating more authentic human performances into every interaction within the game. This approach aims to create a more compelling and believable narrative, ensuring that players can fully immerse themselves in the rich stories that Arc Raiders has to offer.
