Astraeos, the Ark Survival Ascended DLC inspired by the rich tapestry of Greek mythology, has captured the hearts of many, including myself. Originally conceived as a free mod for Survival Evolved by the talented modder ‘Nekatus,’ this expansion has transitioned into a full-fledged DLC in collaboration with Studio Wildcard. Since its early launch in February 2025, Astraeos has seen continuous growth, culminating in a significant update on its one-year anniversary. However, the developer has recently announced that August will mark the final update for Astraeos, introducing one last creature that is set to make a grand entrance.
The Enchantment of Astraeos
While the vibrant jungles and prehistoric inhabitants of Ark Survival Ascended are undeniably captivating, the enchanting landscapes of Astraeos, paired with its mystical elements, have made it my personal favorite among the Ark locales. This upcoming update promises to be the last major enhancement, but it brings with it a truly magnificent new companion: the Boaratos, affectionately dubbed ‘the burning hog.’ This fiery creature is described as “a bruiser that’s happiest when things get up close, and preferably a little singed.”
The Boaratos is the brainchild of another well-known figure in the Ark modding community, ‘Dragonheart.’ Renowned for his work on Arkology: New Encounters, which introduces a plethora of variants to nearly every creature in the game, Dragonheart has collaborated with several talented individuals to bring this latest project to fruition. After refining the creature, it was handed over to Studio Wildcard for final adjustments and balancing.
A Fiery Addition to the Ark Universe
While Dragonheart remains coy about the full capabilities of the Boaratos, he hints at exciting features to be revealed upon the update’s release. Studio Wildcard offers a glimpse into the creature’s prowess, noting that this hot-headed hog combines formidable physical strength with fiery attacks, making it a worthy adversary against some of the toughest creatures in the Ark universe.
Interestingly, the Boaratos’s talents extend beyond combat. Studio Wildcard mentions that “trees have a curious tendency to end up a little more… charred” before the Boaratos brings them crashing down. This could provide a swift method for players to stock up on charcoal without the usual hassle. And for those brave enough to engage a Boaratos in battle, the rewards could be quite delectable: “Let’s just say the spoils might be best enjoyed around the breakfast table with a side of eggs.”
Anticipation Builds for the Final Update
Dragonheart teases that “one very important aspect of him will make him an essential tame for everyone, and I mean that quite literally.” While I approach any claim of a ‘literally essential’ tame with caution, the excitement surrounding the Boaratos is palpable. The good news is that the wait to uncover its secrets is almost over.
The final update for Ark Astraeos is set to release on Wednesday, August 26. The full expansion is available for .99 / £12.79, though a base copy of Ark Survival Evolved is required to enjoy it. While I will miss the journey of Astraeos, this moment presents the perfect opportunity to immerse myself once more in the mystical hills, beaches, caverns, and ruins that this enchanting world has to offer.
