Arrowhead boss calls for middle ground in AI debate

The ongoing discourse surrounding artificial intelligence in game development has reached a fever pitch, with opinions sharply divided. Shams Jorjani, head of Arrowhead Studios, recently shared his insights on this contentious issue during an interview with The Game Business, as reported by VGC. He emphasized the need for a balanced perspective amidst the polarized views that dominate the conversation.

Finding Common Ground

Jorjani noted that the debate over AI’s role in the gaming industry has become a significant flashpoint, particularly following the controversy surrounding Embark Studios’ use of generative AI in their titles, Arc Raiders and The Finals. He remarked, “This is such a trigger point for big parts of the games industry today.” As the industry awaits legal clarifications on fair use, Jorjani likened the current climate to the extremes often seen in cultural discussions, where opinions swing dramatically from one end to the other.

“I find that anything that is AI-related debate in the games industry ends up being on both ends of the spectrum,” he explained. On one side, there are executives from major companies like Square Enix touting the benefits of automation, claiming that up to 77 percent of quality assurance processes could be automated. Conversely, many developers express deep concerns, feeling that their very livelihoods are at stake, leading them to label all AI as detrimental.

In light of these contrasting viewpoints, Jorjani posed a thought-provoking question: “Maybe could it be that reality is somewhere in the middle? Could it be?” His call for a nuanced understanding reflects a growing recognition that the future of AI in gaming may not be as binary as it seems, suggesting that a more measured approach could pave the way for innovation while addressing the concerns of those affected by these technological advancements.
