Aspyr removes AI content from Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered

Developer Aspyr has taken a decisive step in addressing concerns surrounding the remastered versions of Tomb Raider 4-6 by implementing a hotfix aimed at eliminating “unauthorised AI-generated content.” This update, announced on the studio’s support page and highlighted by Time Extension, specifically targets the AI voiceover elements that had drawn scrutiny.

Addressing Concerns

While Aspyr has not disclosed the exact nature of the content removed, it is widely believed that this action stems from a complaint lodged by Françoise Cadol, the voice actress who portrayed Lara Croft in the French editions of the games. Cadol raised alarms earlier in September, alleging that Aspyr had utilized AI technology to replicate her voice without her permission.

In their statement, Aspyr acknowledged the issue, stating, “A Hotfix for our most recent patch has just been released to address unauthorised AI generated content. We’ve addressed this issue by removing all AI voiceover content, while retaining the improvements made in the previous update.” The studio expressed regret for any inconvenience this situation may have caused to players and encouraged users to reach out to their customer support for further assistance.

This move reflects a growing sensitivity within the gaming industry regarding the use of AI in creative processes, particularly when it involves the likeness and voice of human performers. As the landscape of game development continues to evolve, the balance between innovation and ethical considerations remains a pivotal topic for developers and players alike.
