Bloodlines 2’s first patch prioritizes fashion over features, and I’m not sure how I feel about it

Curiosity surrounded the release of the first patch for Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, especially after an emergency hotfix addressed the frustrating issue of the game’s title screen freezing. While this initial update marks a step forward, it also highlights the considerable work still needed to refine the game’s performance, which has faced criticism since its launch.

Patch Highlights

The inaugural update, while effective in squashing numerous bugs, primarily emphasizes customization. Players can now explore a range of new hairstyles and makeup options for the character Phyre. This focus on aesthetics feels somewhat peculiar, particularly as the game still lacks fundamental features, such as the ability to manually save progress. However, for those who embrace the Toreador lifestyle, the importance of fashion cannot be overstated.

The Chinese Room has provided several workarounds for some of the game’s more significant issues, notably concerning motion blur. Yet, the patch reveals a few foundational elements that seem to be absent. In the patch 1.0.2 blog post, aptly named the ‘Halloween update’, the developer acknowledges the community’s desire for features like a field of view (FOV) slider and the option to skip Fabien’s storyline during subsequent playthroughs. Unfortunately, these enhancements are not included in this update.

Instead, players can look forward to eight new hairstyles, diverse makeup styles, and an array of eye colors. Among the new offerings are striking designs such as golden tears—ideal for the fashion-forward Toreador—skull-inspired face paint that may resonate with Nosferatu fans, and a masquerade mask that adds an ironic twist. Additional features include glowing red eyes, serpentine slits, and elegantly curving horns.

While the introduction of these customization options is undoubtedly a positive development, one cannot help but wonder why they were not available at launch. For those who value character design, these additions could have alleviated some early frustrations.

More importantly, the patch also addresses a variety of bug fixes. It resolves several title crashes, including issues encountered during game startup, and rectifies problems with non-playable characters (NPCs) and missing voiceovers. Although my own playthroughs did not reveal many game-breaking issues, I am pleased to see that Melancholic kine will now respond to my Toreador’s stylish ensembles, as well as my Lasombra’s priestly attire.
