Ryan Coogler’s genre-defying film, Sinners, continues to make waves in its fourth weekend, driven by an impressive wave of positive word-of-mouth that is a rarity in the film industry.
In a remarkable achievement, Sinners has officially surpassed the 0 million threshold at the domestic box office, concluding Friday with a cumulative total of 9.8 million. This supernatural vampire narrative marks yet another triumph for Coogler, the visionary director known for his work on the Black Panther and Creed franchises. Notably, actor Michael B. Jordan has been a consistent presence in all five of Coogler’s films.
Warner Bros. Celebrates a Double Win
This weekend also represents a significant double victory for Warner Bros. Motion group co-chairs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, as A Minecraft Movie — now the second-highest grossing video game adaptation of all time, unadjusted for inflation — crosses the 0 million mark globally. This achievement positions Minecraft and Sinners as the top two grossing films of the year domestically.
Minecraft stands as the leading Hollywood film of 2025 to date at the worldwide box office, followed by Disney and Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World with 6 million, and Sinners at 0.8 million.
Marvel is also making headlines this weekend with Thunderbolts, which, much like Sinners, is reaping the benefits of excellent audience ratings. Early projections suggest that the superhero ensemble, featuring Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan, may experience a modest decline of only 51 to 53 percent, potentially earning million or more in its second weekend. This would mark one of the strongest retention rates in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. By Sunday, Thunderbolts is expected to surpass the 0 million mark globally. However, its long-term success remains uncertain as it faces increased competition in the coming weeks, with no new major releases this weekend.
Internally at Warner, De Luca and Abdy have faced scrutiny for their faith in auteur filmmakers and original content. Coogler’s R-rated project is among several such ventures that have proven to be significant successes. Sinners, a period piece set in the Jim Crow South of the early 1930s, features Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers who purchase a juke joint, only to encounter a sinister supernatural presence.
Upon its release, critics were quick to dismiss the million film as a failure. However, they have since been proven wrong. Sinners has resonated particularly well with Black audiences, a demographic often overlooked, while also appealing to white and Latino viewers.
A Minecraft Movie, co-financed and co-produced by Legendary, has exceeded expectations for a video game adaptation and is poised to launch a new franchise for Abdy and De Luca. Although it may not reach the billion milestone achieved by Paramount’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed over .33 billion, it remains a significant accomplishment. Chris Lee’s Vertigo is also involved as a producer on Minecraft.
As the weekend progresses, numbers and estimates will be updated, providing further insight into the ongoing success of these films.
