Bungie is turning Marathon’s loot dial to 11 ahead of its first wipe, opening up Cryo Archive 24/7

Marathon’s journey has recently encountered a few hurdles, particularly as players delve deeper into its expansive world. After several hours of gameplay, the quest structure begins to feel like a lengthy odyssey, with high-tier upgrades demanding a plethora of items that players may have only stumbled upon a handful of times. In response to this feedback, Bungie is preparing an “end of season” update set to roll out on May 19, aiming to address these concerns.

Key Changes on the Horizon

One of the most anticipated features of this update is the adjustment to locked room keys. Previously an elusive drop, these keys will now be guaranteed rewards from on-map events, granting players access to the most coveted loot rooms on Tau Ceti. The blog post elaborates, stating, “Additionally, map events like Intercept, Lockdown, Warden spawns, Convoy, and Anomaly will now be guaranteed on each run, allowing for more frequent opportunities to reap their enhanced rewards.”

Moreover, Warden bosses will now appear in additional locations across Perimeter, Dire Marsh, and Outpost, transforming the rarity of room keys into a more regular feature within Marathon’s loot ecosystem. This shift is expected to enhance the overall gameplay experience significantly.

In a further effort to improve accessibility, Bungie has decided to remove the restrictions on the Cryo Archive entrance, allowing players to access the raid map around the clock for the remainder of season 1. Alongside this, a new Ranked Cryo Archive playlist will be introduced, featuring both low-stakes and high-stakes buy-ins of 3,000 and 10,000 credits, respectively.

Enhancements and Quality of Life Improvements

Several additional changes are set to expedite gameplay and increase generosity:

  • Faction experience gains will see an increase across the board for the remainder of season 1.
  • Key templates will remain intact even if players are downed, allowing for conversion into keys by locating a Matter Fixative item dropped by UESC bots.
  • Wall safes will now have a chance to yield deluxe keys.
  • Quick Rook runs will become more efficient, as the Signal Mask ability will have an extended duration while sprinting.

While Bungie has indicated that some of these changes are temporary for the remainder of season 1, the studio has a history of implementing successful experiments as permanent features. Therefore, players may find themselves enjoying these enhancements beyond the current season.

Looking ahead, the upcoming Season 2: Nightfall, set to launch on June 2, promises to introduce a new Night Marsh zone, a fresh Runner shell, new weaponry, and an innovative system for customizing Runner shell stats known as The Cradle. Players can also expect faster faction progression and various quality-of-life updates based on community feedback. Full details will be unveiled during the week of May 25, keeping the anticipation alive for what lies ahead in the Marathon universe.
