Call of Duty vet Blundell helming new PlayStation studio Dark Outlaw Games

In a significant move within the gaming industry, PlayStation has announced the establishment of a new development studio, Dark Outlaw, under the leadership of Jason Blundell, a veteran known for his pivotal role in the Call of Duty franchise. During a recent conversation with industry insider Jeff Gerstmann, Blundell shared insights into his latest venture, revealing that Dark Outlaw has been diligently “working away in the shadows” on an unannounced project.

New Beginnings for a Gaming Visionary

While details surrounding the studio’s current project remain scarce, Blundell expressed enthusiasm about the journey ahead, noting that the team is in the process of expanding its workforce. “It’s such a privilege to be able to do it with Sony as a new first-party studio,” he remarked. “Sony doesn’t set up first-party studios all the time. To have that privilege is humbling; it’s really nice. I’m really excited.”

Blundell’s reputation in the gaming world is largely attributed to his tenure at Treyarch, where he was instrumental in developing the beloved Zombies mode for the Call of Duty series. After departing from the Activision-owned studio in 2020, he founded Deviation Games, which aimed to create a new triple-A intellectual property for PlayStation. However, Blundell’s journey took another turn when he left Deviation Games in 2022, shortly before the studio was ultimately closed two years later.

As Dark Outlaw begins to carve its niche in the competitive landscape of game development, the industry watches closely, eager to see what innovative experiences Blundell and his team will bring to life under the PlayStation banner.
