Reflecting on her journey into the world of comic book adaptations, Brooks shared her initial apprehensions. “I grew up in a very reserved home,” she explained. “We weren’t exposed to a lot of things. I didn’t have an older brother or a cousin handing me comic books; it was more about the Bible or music sheets.”
When Brooks first encountered the role of Adebayo, she was navigating the challenges of new motherhood during the pandemic, having gained weight after her pregnancy. The unexpected call from Gunn to join an action TV show left her feeling apprehensive about her physical readiness. “I’m in the worst shape of my life. Yes, I can still act, but can I run?” she recalled, laughing at the irony of the situation.
Gunn, who had previously recognized Brooks’ talent in “Orange Is the New Black,” saw an opportunity to place a unique talent at the forefront of a superhero narrative. “The depth was incredible,” he noted, highlighting the potential for Adebayo’s character to resonate with audiences.

“That’s a part of what I love about what we do,” she said, emphasizing the mental, spiritual, and physical challenges of acting. “It challenges you to be your best in every aspect.”
