Epic Mickey creator Warren Spector is ‘a little bitter’ that his studio isn’t getting props for sparking Oswald the Lucky Rabbit’s big comeback

Warren Spector Reflects on Oswald the Lucky Rabbit’s Legacy

Warren Spector, renowned for his influential work on titles such as Ultima Underworld, System Shock, and Deus Ex, recently took to LinkedIn to express his anticipation for Disney’s forthcoming miniseries featuring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. This project was highlighted by Jon Favreau during the recent D23 event, where he shared insights into Oswald’s origins in the 1920s and the character’s tumultuous history.

While Spector is enthusiastic about the miniseries, he also voiced concerns regarding what he perceives as a neglect of the contributions made by the game that revitalized Oswald’s presence in popular culture. Favreau’s presentation touched on the character’s creation and the unfortunate loss of rights by Walt Disney shortly after, leading to Oswald being overshadowed by the emergence of Mickey Mouse. Despite the production of several Oswald shorts over the years, the character remained largely forgotten until Disney regained the rights in 2006.

Since then, Oswald has made sporadic appearances in various media, but Spector believes that the significance of the game Epic Mickey should not be overlooked. Originally released as a Nintendo Wii exclusive, the game received mixed reviews and modest sales. However, it found renewed appreciation with the release of the Rebrushed Edition in 2024, which garnered “very positive” reviews on Steam, possibly due to its connection to the acclaimed Deus Ex franchise, as noted by writer Jeremy Peel.

Despite the challenges faced by the sequel, Epic Mickey 2, which sold even fewer copies than its predecessor, Spector emphasizes the importance of Junction Point’s role in redefining Oswald. The studio breathed new life into the character, imbuing him with depth and personality that transcended his initial status as merely a precursor to Mickey Mouse. As the release of the Oswald miniseries approaches, set for debut in 2027, there is hope that Disney will acknowledge Junction Point’s pivotal contributions to Oswald’s legacy.
