ESA wants to be consulted on Trump tariffs

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA), representing the interests of the US video games industry, has formally requested to be included in discussions regarding future tariffs proposed by President Donald Trump. In a statement provided to Kotaku, the ESA expressed concern that these tariffs could impose a substantial burden on American consumers. The industry, which is heavily reliant on imported components—particularly from China—faces a 10 percent tariff under the current administration’s policies.

Impact on Consumers and Industry

In addition to the tariffs on Chinese imports, there were also plans to implement a 25 percent tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada, although these have been temporarily suspended. The ESA articulated its position clearly, stating, “Tariffs on video game devices and related products would impact Americans of all ages across the country.” They emphasized the need for a transparent consultation process involving the private sector to mitigate potential adverse effects on everyday Americans and the rapidly expanding entertainment sector.

Further elaborating on their stance in an updated statement to VGC, the ESA highlighted the cultural significance of video games, noting that they are among the most cherished forms of entertainment for a diverse audience. The association warned that imposing tariffs could negatively affect hundreds of millions of Americans and undermine the industry’s vital contributions to the US economy. They expressed eagerness to collaborate with both the Administration and Congress to explore avenues for sustaining the economic growth that their sector supports.
