Former Forza dev says original Motorsport series died in Microsoft’s cuts, but Forza Horizon lives on
In a significant turn of events for the gaming community, former Forza content coordinator Fred Russell has shared on Facebook that the Forza Motorsport series has been effectively discontinued following Microsoft’s recent mass layoffs. Russell, who departed from Turn 10 Studios in 2016, appears to maintain connections within the company, providing insight into the current state of affairs.
Insights from Within
Russell expressed his sentiments on the closure, stating, “Turn 10 Studios has shuttered the Forza Motorsport space and the team is no more. A very sad day for one of the best car racing video games. I loved my time there.” His comments come amid reports that up to 50% of Turn 10’s workforce has been affected by these layoffs, as noted by industry journalist Jason Schreier on Bluesky.
Despite the unfortunate news surrounding the Motorsport series, Russell reassured fans that the Forza Horizon spinoff will continue to thrive. In response to inquiries about the future of Turn 10, he confirmed, “Forza Horizon will continue at this point.”
Critical Reception Amid Changes
The Forza Motorsport series has received mixed reviews from players, currently holding a “Mixed” rating on Steam. Phil Iwaniuk, a contributor at PC Gamer, rated the latest installment an 80%, commending its execution of the arcade racing format, even while noting a lack of innovation. In contrast, the Forza Horizon 5 title has garnered more favorable attention, with PC Gamer’s editor-in-chief Phil Savage awarding it a 90% score, describing it as “a ridiculous car playground masquerading as an open world racing game.”
As the gaming industry navigates these changes, the future of racing titles remains uncertain, but the enduring popularity of the Horizon series suggests that there is still much to look forward to for fans of the franchise.
