Game Pass titles will receive unofficial support on Linux

Enthusiasts are taking the initiative to bridge the gap for gamers on Linux as Microsoft has yet to extend official support for PC games on Game Pass for this operating system. The Xodus project, an unofficial endeavor, is making strides to enable Xbox PC titles to be played on platforms beyond Windows, as reported by GamingOnLinux.

Innovative Solutions for Gamers

The Xodus project is described on its GitHub page as an open-source reverse-engineering effort aimed at facilitating the operation of Xbox PC games, including those available through Game Pass, on Linux and Mac systems. The developers assert,

“We handle everything needed to get GDK-based Xbox titles running outside of Windows.”

Despite the lack of endorsement from Microsoft, the team behind Xodus boasts a wealth of experience, including contributors who previously worked on the Heroic Games Launcher. This open-source game launcher supports various platforms such as the Epic Games Store, GOG, and Amazon Prime, and is accessible on Linux, Windows, and macOS.

Currently, Xodus allows users to log in, download packages, and obtain game licenses. However, the developers acknowledge that significant work remains to be done to achieve their ambitious goals.

Aiming for Comprehensive Support

Xodus aims to support a broad spectrum of titles from the Xbox library on PC, specifically those formatted in GDK and MSIXVC. The project also addresses the issue of backwards compatibility with Xbox, stating that Xodus is capable of downloading and running these games. However, they caution that additional patches for Wine, DXVK, or VKD3D-Proton may be necessary for optimal performance.

As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, the efforts of the Xodus team highlight the passion and dedication of the community in enhancing accessibility for gamers on Linux.
