Hands On With Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: A Hopeful Hat Trick

As I stood face-to-face with a formidable bald-headed man, a smile crept across my face. He was large and imposing, reminiscent of the classic confrontations that defined the adventures of Indiana Jones. The question lingered: how would our archeologist hero tackle an adversary nearly double his size? The options were plentiful—draw my pistol in a dramatic showdown or perhaps brandish my trusty whip. If only I could recall the correct key to press…

In true Indy fashion, I resorted to improvisation, seizing whatever was at hand—a wine bottle, a shovel, or a club. With a flurry of strikes against my opponent, I ultimately sent him crashing to the ground, victorious. Triumphant music filled the air, a clear indication that MachineGames had successfully captured the essence of Indiana Jones in their upcoming title.

Big Shoes to Fill

As a lifelong fan of Indiana Jones, particularly enamored with The Last Crusade, my expectations soared when I was granted a preview of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. This game, set to launch in December, represents a significant moment for the franchise, marking its transition into the realm of modern AAA video games. MachineGames, renowned for their work on Wolfenstein: The New Order, faced the challenge of translating the adventurous spirit of Indiana Jones into a first-person gaming experience.

The adventure begins at Marshall College, where Indy takes on the role of a professor. A mysterious Latin-speaking priest has infiltrated the college’s museum, piquing our hero’s curiosity. Throughout my playthrough, it became evident that MachineGames had meticulously recreated the college environment, allowing players to explore a setting only briefly glimpsed in the films. As Indy, players embark on a quest to uncover the reasons behind the priest’s theft of an ancient artifact, encountering familiar characters like Marcus Brody and references to Indy’s past love, Marion Ravenwood.

Duking It Out

While the game successfully evokes the spirit of Indiana Jones, it also introduces fresh elements. The narrative leads Indy to Vatican City, where he seeks out a local priest and old friend. However, the city is rife with hostile soldiers loyal to Mussolini, presenting a new kind of challenge. My initial gameplay experience shifted from traditional gunfights to stealthy maneuvers, requiring me to navigate the environment creatively, incapacitating foes without drawing attention.

The combat mechanics leaned towards stealth; I could utilize nearby objects to create distractions or engage in hand-to-hand combat. The thrill of using unconventional weapons, like a violin or mandolin, added a layer of satisfaction to the encounters. However, the action could escalate into chaotic brawls, necessitating careful timing and strategy as Indy’s stamina waned during fights.

While shooting enemies was an option, it came with consequences. The sound of gunfire attracted more foes, a lesson I learned the hard way during a tense moment in Egypt. The gameplay also featured puzzles, such as navigating through a scorpion-infested area by lighting torches and swinging across pits with Indy’s whip, enhancing the adventure’s immersive quality.

Am I Doing This Right?

The gameplay experience felt authentic to the Indiana Jones legacy, with cut scenes that highlighted Indy’s signature reactions and mannerisms. However, while the experience was enjoyable, it wasn’t without its flaws. Combat could be inconsistent, with enemies sometimes opting for fistfights despite being armed. Additionally, while the environments were richly detailed, the NPCs felt more like background elements, lacking depth and realism.

Despite a few frustrations, I persevered, channeling Indy’s determination to solve puzzles and navigate through enemy patrols. My time with The Great Circle was limited to just over two hours, leaving me eager to discover how the story unfolds and whether it can capture the climactic excitement of the earlier films. With a release date set for December 9 on PCs and Xbox, followed by a PlayStation 5 launch in the spring, anticipation builds for what promises to be an exhilarating journey across exotic locales. Stay tuned for a comprehensive review as the release date approaches.
