I absolutely agree with 33% of you when it comes to your choice of freaky Subnautica 2 critters

I find myself in the unusual position of admitting that I have yet to immerse myself in the depths of Subnautica 2. The vastness of our oceans, which we have explored only a fraction of, evokes a sense of trepidation within me. Consequently, I tend to steer clear of aquatic adventures, especially those that plunge into the abyss where my feet cannot touch the ground. The deep end of a pool? A realm I prefer to avoid.

Fortunately, my colleagues at PC Gamer exhibit a braver spirit. Some might even label their enthusiasm as reckless—after all, it is the ocean we’re discussing—but I choose to embrace a more diplomatic tone this time around. Our senior guides writer, Sean Martin, has been particularly taken with the game’s episodic structure, appreciating the additional space it affords for exploration. Meanwhile, Tyler Wilde has navigated the tumultuous waters surrounding the game’s development and emerged with a favorable review, declaring it quite enjoyable. Fraser Brown, on the other hand, would appreciate the experience more if it were a tad quieter, but what would our coverage be without a touch of contrarianism?

Exploring the Underwater Menagerie

A game centered on the mysteries of the deep would be incomplete without its cast of peculiar sea creatures. Recently, we engaged our audience with a poll to discover which of these quirky denizens resonated most with them. The results were illuminating.

Leading the charge with a commanding 33% of the votes was the Periscopic Clowncrab. Its exaggerated eyes and diminutive pincers, coupled with an endearingly vacant expression, captured the hearts of many. While I remain uncertain of its actual temperament within the game, I prefer to imagine it as harmless as a playful kitten.

In a surprising twist, the Coral Crab secured second place with 22% of the votes. Despite its name suggesting cuteness, its formidable legs and imposing posture might induce a mild panic if encountered unexpectedly at night. I must clarify, it’s more peculiar than outright terrifying, yet I can hardly fathom why so many chose it as a favorite.

The Great Jaw and BFJ followed closely behind, garnering 14% and 12% of the votes, respectively. While they didn’t evoke the same level of unease, I was slightly disappointed to see some of the more unique critters lagging behind. The Foureye only managed 10%—its lack of distinctiveness likely contributing to its lower appeal.

However, the Waxmoon deserves a special mention. Although it may not fit the “freaky” criteria, its gothic aesthetic is undeniably striking. It resembles a mythical war axe, perhaps something one might encounter in a fantasy MMO, or even consider tattooing as a tribute to its cool design.

Did we overlook any particularly bizarre creatures from Subnautica 2 that deserve recognition?
