In a bold move at the Summer Game Fest, 1047 Games unveiled the much-anticipated battle royale mode for Splitgate 2. The announcement came directly from CEO and co-founder Ian Proulx, who took to the stage to share his vision for revitalizing the first-person shooter genre, which he described as “tragically stale.” His passionate address, however, was somewhat overshadowed by his choice of attire—a black hat emblazoned with the phrase “MAKE FPS GREAT AGAIN,” a playful nod to a well-known political slogan.
The reception to Proulx’s fashion statement was mixed, with many viewers focusing more on the hat than the game itself. In response to the backlash, Proulx took to the official Splitgate X account, urging fans to interpret the hat’s message literally. He emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing the multiplayer FPS experience, stating, “We hope to fix that, whether you want Arena, Battle Royale, Onslaught, or Map Creator.”
Alongside the launch of the new mode, 1047 Games introduced a shop refresh featuring an skin bundle, marking it as the most expensive item available in the free-to-play FPS to date. This pricing decision has sparked discussions among the player community regarding the value of in-game purchases.
As the battle royale mode attracted a surge of players, it inadvertently led to technical issues, including a malfunction in the experience points (XP) system. 1047 Games has acknowledged the problem and is actively working on a solution to restore normal functionality.
