Last Flag, the latest multiplayer shooter from Night Street Games—founded by Dan Reynolds, the frontman of Imagine Dragons—made its debut on Steam earlier this month. Despite the studio’s extensive promotional efforts, including a premiere at the Summer Game Fest and leveraging the band’s social media platforms, the game’s reception appears to be somewhat subdued. Priced attractively at /£12, Last Flag faces the daunting challenge of distinguishing itself in the bustling landscape of Steam’s offerings.
Free Weekend Initiative
In response to the lukewarm reception, Night Street Games remains undeterred. They have announced that Last Flag will be available to play for free every weekend until the first update is released this summer. The studio expressed their commitment to enhancing the game, stating, “The team is working hard to bring these updates to the game as soon as possible, but until then, we wanted to give everyone who hasn’t had a chance to check out Last Flag the opportunity to play for free!”
While I have yet to experience Last Flag firsthand, early impressions suggest it offers an engaging multiplayer experience. Tyler Wilde, who has had the opportunity to play it during its development, described it as an enjoyable blend of capture the flag and hide and seek. He noted, “At first I thought there was no reason to hide your flag anywhere except at the very back of your zone. But the flipside is that your opponents are probably going to search those areas first.”
As for player feedback, the Steam reviews currently reflect a ‘Mostly Positive’ rating at 73%. Even among the criticisms, many players commend the game’s core mechanics. The primary concerns revolve around the absence of regional servers and the prevalence of matches filled with bots. These issues may be alleviated as the player base grows, a scenario that the free weekend initiative aims to facilitate. Night Street’s strategy appears to be a thoughtful approach, and there is hope that shooter enthusiasts will seize the opportunity to explore Last Flag.
