League of Legends Classic is real: “This was the right time”

League of Legends Classic has officially entered the spotlight, albeit a bit earlier than Riot Games had intended. A recent slip-up on the Public Beta Environment (PBE) revealed substantial details about this nostalgic return, prompting the developer to pivot gracefully and embrace the unexpected buzz. In a delightful update video, Executive Producer Paul “Pabro” Bellezza and Head of League Studio Andrei “Meddler” van Roon showcased their enthusiasm, with van Roon humorously acknowledging the situation: “I mean, everyone else seemed to be announcing it, so we figured we’d get in on the action.”

Embracing Nostalgia

Whispers of League of Legends Classic have been circulating for quite some time, stirring excitement among long-time players. For those who experienced the game during its formative years, the prospect of revisiting the simpler times—before the vast roster of champions and complex mechanics—evokes a sense of nostalgia. The allure of classic Runes and the original Summoner Mastery trees beckons to many, promising a chance to relive those cherished moments.

Meddler shared that the initial plan was to unveil the teaser video just before the upcoming MSI Finals on July 12. However, with the unintentional leak on the PBE, the team opted to accelerate their announcement. The resulting developer update is a captivating presentation, featuring Pabro as an enthusiastic researcher, complete with a chaotic pinboard and red string connecting various ideas. “When is it, you know? Let me ask you this, Andrei: What is League to you?” he inquires, setting the tone for a lively discussion.

As the conversation unfolds, Pabro’s excitement grows, leading to playful speculation about the game’s early days. “Two Shens in the game! Is it OG Beta when there were 40 champions? Look at Lux – look at the way she used to look.” Meddler, ever the thoughtful counterpart, muses about the possibility of revisiting old favorites like Graves. After tossing around potential names, the duo settles on “League… Classic.”

What Lies Ahead

The leaked details hinted at more than just a return to the original champion roster, with Meddler confirming that the lineup will extend beyond the initial 40 champions. While Graves is set to make a comeback, the specifics of the gameplay kits remain under wraps for now. Meddler emphasizes the importance of maintaining some surprises for the official reveal, stating, “I’m going to hold off on gameplay specifics generally for now, want to see exactly how much we leaked and how much we can still hold as something to reveal next month.”

Among the exciting features hinted at are the revival of old-style Runes and the Summoner Mastery system, although Meddler cautions that nothing is finalized. The team is prepared to adapt as they move forward, ensuring that any necessary adjustments can be made post-launch. “We’ll always do some contingency planning in case we’re wrong about some of our assumptions and need to make adjustments post launch,” he reassures.

Despite the premature leak, Meddler acknowledges the disappointment of having their grand reveal spoiled. “Not going to lie, little grumpy we got so close to the planned reveal and then leaked some stuff at the last minute. But bigger picture, not a big deal, and we do some contingency planning in case things like this happen.” He also notes that League Classic will operate within the same client, utilizing modern technology while adhering to the 2026 system requirements.

As for the timing of this nostalgic endeavor, Meddler succinctly explains, “We figured this was the right time for Classic (celebrate the OG days before looking to the future).” Players can look forward to the full reveal of League Classic, scheduled for Saturday, July 11 at 11 PM PDT, with additional insights into League Next expected at Worlds in October.
