Legacy of Atlantis is “perfect” for newcomers, because it’s “the foundation of where Tomb Raider is going”

Bridging Generations in Gaming

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis finds itself at a unique crossroads, appealing to multiple generations of gamers. For those who fondly remember the sharp-edged Lara Croft of the ’90s, this latest installment evokes nostalgia, while also catering to a newer audience introduced to the character through the 2013 reboot trilogy, which portrayed her as a resilient survivor. Now, more than a decade later, Legacy of Atlantis seeks to harmonize these distinct interpretations of the iconic explorer.

Experience Director Jeff Adams expresses confidence in the game’s approach, stating that it serves as a reimagining of the original title but operates on a “much deeper” level. The forthcoming Tomb Raider: Catalyst promises a fresh narrative, leading some to wonder if it might be a better entry point for newcomers. However, the teams at Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog are keen to highlight that Legacy of Atlantis is the ideal starting place.

In a conversation with PCGamesN during the Summer Game Fest, Art Director Arek Tomaszewski shared his thoughts on the timing of the release. He believes that the nearly ten-year hiatus since Shadow of the Tomb Raider has created a heightened anticipation for Legacy of Atlantis. “People need to get hungry enough for a new one,” he notes. “It’s actually really good timing, because people are hungry for it, and we were hungry to make it.” This sentiment resonates even more with the simultaneous development of two games.

Adams remains somewhat enigmatic regarding how Lara’s character in Legacy of Atlantis will compare to her portrayal in Catalyst. He emphasizes that this game lays the groundwork for the future of the franchise, making it a perfect entry point for both seasoned fans and newcomers alike. Game Director Raul Siqueira reinforces this notion, describing it as a “no homework needed” experience.

Siqueira elaborates, “If you’ve played the other games, you’re probably going to grab a lot more of the Easter Eggs and little nods that we’re doing. But if you know absolutely nothing about Tomb Raider, Legacy of Atlantis stands on its own feet and does a great job of introducing who Lara is as a character, and what her journey is all about.”

As the team looks ahead, the possibility of further reimaginings remains an open question. “If it’s up to us, we consider all of them forever,” Siqueira states passionately. “Making Tomb Raider games is one of the greatest privileges that I have in my career, and if it’s up to me, I’ll keep making them until someone takes it off us.”

Before contemplating future endeavors, however, Crystal Dynamics is focused on delivering a successful Legacy of Atlantis. Adams succinctly puts it, “Let’s get this right. You get this right, reintroduce Lara to her core fans, present her for new fans, and establish this really great foundational starting point. Then the world is wide open.”

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is set to launch on Friday, February 12, 2027. Gamers can wishlist it on Steam to receive notifications upon its arrival, whether they seek a nostalgic experience or are stepping into the adventure for the first time.
