Mid-Year Gaming Landscape: A Diverse Array of Contenders
As we find ourselves past the midpoint of 2026, the gaming industry presents a curious paradox—while it may seem that little has changed, a plethora of titles have indeed made their mark. Standout games such as Mixtape and Lego Batman have captured the hearts of players, while ambitious projects like Crimson Desert have also resonated well with the gaming community.
However, the question of which title deserves the coveted Game of the Year accolade remains open for debate. Earlier this month, a poll was conducted to gauge the preferences of our readers, revealing a diverse range of opinions on the current frontrunners.
Leading the pack is Resident Evil Requiem, with 16% of voters championing the adventures of Grace Ashcroft and her uncle, Kennedy. Close behind is Crimson Desert, securing 12% of the overall votes. This title, while initially met with mixed reviews due to its ambitious scope and execution, has undergone significant updates from developer Pearl Abyss, transforming it into a beloved experience for dedicated players.
Another title, 007 First Light, has also made a strong impression, garnering 9% of the votes. Following closely are Slay the Spire 2 and Forza Horizon 6, each with 8%, while Pragmata and Mewgenics received 7% and 5%, respectively.
Interestingly, the bottom of the poll reveals a tie between two contenders, each with 383 votes: the MMO expansion World of Warcraft: Midnight and Bungie’s Marathon. The former’s position is perhaps expected, given the genre’s ongoing evolution into niche markets. However, the placement of Marathon is somewhat surprising, especially considering its favorable review score of 90% from our FPS expert, Morgan Park.
For those who missed the opportunity to participate in the poll, now is your chance to voice your opinions. Whether you wish to highlight games that deserve more attention or engage in a spirited discussion about the merits of early GOTY conversations, your input is invaluable. The gaming landscape is ever-evolving, and every voice contributes to the vibrant tapestry of this industry.
