Cross-Platform Matchmaking Options
In a recent interview with Ali213, Joe Ziegler, the game director for Marathon, shared that players will have the option to disable cross-platform matchmaking. This feature allows players on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S to opt out of facing off against PC users, and it is expected that PC players will have a similar choice. This flexibility acknowledges the ongoing debate regarding the competitive advantages that PC players may have, particularly in fast-paced environments like first-person shooters.
Marathon, designed as an extraction shooter, will incorporate a mix of player versus player (PvP), player versus environment (PvE), and player versus player versus environment (PvPvE) elements. However, Bungie has chosen not to adopt the matchmaking strategies seen in titles like Arc Raiders, which categorize players based on their likelihood of engaging with each other versus in-game adversaries. Instead, there will be provisions for those who prefer a more PvE-focused experience.
The recent State of Play event announced an upcoming server slam on February 26, offering players a chance to preview the game before its official release on March 5.
