Marvel Rivals has drawn comparisons to Overwatch 2, yet it notably lacks one feature that has become synonymous with many modern multiplayer games: loot boxes. However, recent findings suggest that this could soon change. A dataminer has unearthed references to “Mysteries” within the Season 4 files of Marvel Rivals, hinting at a potential introduction of a loot box-like system. But should fans of the game be bracing themselves for a financial impact? Not quite yet.
Potential Loot Box Features
The leaker, known as RivalsInfo, has approached this discovery with caution. They emphasize that while the presence of loot boxes may be on the horizon for Marvel Rivals, it remains uncertain whether these features will indeed make their way into the game. The findings indicate that Season 4’s files contain multiple mentions of “mystery box logic,” including terms like “cosmic mysteries number” and “BOXOPENHISTORY_CHANGE.” This suggests a connection to the traditional loot box system, but the implications are still unclear.
Curious about the origins of this “old loot box system”? Back in 2024, another dataminer, RivalsLeaks, revealed loot box opening animations among Marvel Rivals’ files. While nothing came of that discovery at the time, it hinted that developer Netease had at least considered the idea of incorporating loot boxes into the game.
This latest revelation could mirror that earlier situation, possibly indicating that Netease is merely repurposing existing code. It’s also worth noting that the developer has already implemented purchasable skins in Marvel Rivals, suggesting they have alternative revenue streams without the need for loot boxes.
The reaction to RivalsInfo’s findings on Twitter/X has been mixed. Fans are divided on whether the introduction of loot boxes would enhance or detract from their gaming experience. Interestingly, some players from the Overwatch 2 community have even expressed a desire for the return of loot boxes in their own game.
As for what lies ahead for Marvel Rivals, Season 4: The Season of the Dragon is set to launch this Friday, September 12, bringing with it a new outsider hero and a host of fresh content.
