Innovative Features on the Horizon for Xbox’s Project Helix
Recent discussions surrounding Xbox’s forthcoming Project Helix console have sparked considerable interest, particularly regarding its anticipated dual support for both console and PC games. This new console is expected to mirror the functionality of the ROG Xbox Ally handheld, featuring an “Xbox Mode” interface that seamlessly transitions to a full Windows environment, granting users the flexibility they desire.
Among the exciting features currently under testing is a significant enhancement that aligns Xbox with functionalities that Steam users have long enjoyed: the capability to incorporate third-party games and applications directly into the Xbox PC app launcher.
According to insights from PureXbox, a preview version of the Xbox app now showcases a plus icon within the My Library tab. By selecting this icon, Windows users can access a new window that facilitates the addition of virtually any program to their Xbox library, allowing for convenient launching from the app.
This new window presents a shortlist of recognized applications, but should users not find their desired program listed, they can simply click the Browse button to navigate through File Explorer. This feature supports the manual selection of both “.exe” and “.cmd” files for inclusion in the launcher.
Once an application is added, it appears in the My Library section as an unofficial “game.” Users can then choose from options such as ‘Play,’ ‘Remove from library,’ and ‘Edit.’ The Edit feature offers further customization, allowing users to modify file locations, rename the app, update its artwork, and even append optional command-line arguments.
With the official launch of the console not anticipated until at least late 2027, Microsoft has ample opportunity to refine these innovative features. As Xbox moves away from traditional console paradigms, delivering a polished user experience at launch will be paramount. The gradual introduction and testing of these updates across PC and handheld platforms present a strategic approach to fine-tuning functionality ahead of the highly awaited release.
