Epic Games Store to be Preloaded on Android Devices
After a lengthy legal battle between Epic Games and Google, a resolution that is sure to please the game publisher is finally coming to fruition. Thanks to Telefónica, a major carrier in multiple countries across Europe and Latin America, the Epic Games Store will now come preloaded onto Android devices.
If you remember, a judge recently ruled that Google must allow Epic Games to offer its store for download on Google Play without any app tax or “scare screens.” Previously, Google Play and the Galaxy app store would typically come preloaded on Android devices, especially those from Samsung. It’s worth noting that most Android devices already come with one or more app stores out of the box, debunking the misconception that Google was prohibiting third-party app stores.
For consumers, this development is undoubtedly positive. When users need to download third-party content on an Android device, they expose themselves to potentially harmful software. It’s always crucial to download from trusted sources. However, from Google’s perspective, this means relinquishing control and missing out on revenue. While this may impact their bottom line, Google has cited other reasons for their stance.
In the US, the legal proceedings are ongoing. Google has appealed the judge’s decision, and updates are eagerly awaited.
On a lighter note, a recent encounter with a friend’s 10-year-old child reignited my interest in Fortnite. After booting up the game for the first time in years, I quickly realized how much it had evolved, and I was swiftly defeated multiple times. It seems I won’t be joining the younger generation in playing Fortnite, especially on a mobile device. Kudos to those who can keep up with the game’s current pace!
