Hytale’s Unique Path Forward
Hypixel Studios has recently unveiled an expansive vision for Hytale, marking a distinct departure from its origins in the Minecraft universe. While the game undeniably draws inspiration from Mojang’s iconic sandbox, it is evident that Hytale is charting its own course, as highlighted in the latest Chapter 1 preview.
Game Director Simon Collins-Laflamme reflects on a conversation with Minecraft’s Chief Creative Officer, Jens ‘Jeb’ Bergensten, who expressed a desire for Hytale to carve out its own identity. In a recent exchange on Bluesky, Bergensten noted, “I’d like it to be more different to Minecraft. It’s very polished, but the feeling I get when I play is that I’d rather just play Minecraft.” His acknowledgment of Hytale’s polish was met with gratitude from Collins-Laflamme, who recognized the importance of distinguishing their game from Minecraft to ensure its value in the gaming landscape.
Collins-Laflamme reiterates this sentiment, stating, “He was right, and I said it then too. The features that make us unique weren’t in the game yet.” With the recent reveal of Chapter 1, the differences between the two titles have become increasingly pronounced. “Yesterday’s blog shows what that means for the future,” he elaborates.
The upcoming features promise to elevate Hytale beyond traditional block-building mechanics. Players can look forward to:
- Handcrafted dungeons featuring multi-phase boss fights
- Combat abilities that enhance gameplay dynamics
- Runeforging, allowing for deeper customization
- World events that create immersive experiences
- Companions integrated into the crafting loop
Collins-Laflamme emphasizes the studio’s ambition to develop a more profound RPG experience, stating, “We want to be a deeper RPG, a stronger adventure identity, and a game that will evolve massively over the next few years.” He acknowledges that while Hytale is fundamentally a block game, it is only at the beginning of its journey.
This clear differentiation benefits both Hytale and Minecraft, allowing each to thrive in its unique space within the gaming ecosystem. The emergence of other voxel-based games, such as Everwind, which embraces a Skyrim-like fantasy RPG aesthetic, and Vintage Story, known for its challenging survival elements, further illustrates that the voxel style can encompass a variety of gameplay experiences. The anticipation surrounding Hytale’s evolving direction is palpable, especially as it moves away from merely replicating a ‘modern’ Minecraft experience.
