Minecraft puts its Java multiplayer test on hold: “The experience wasn’t what we wanted”

Minecraft 26.2 Pre-Release: A Mix of Excitement and Setbacks

The latest pre-release for Minecraft Java Edition has arrived, bringing with it a blend of anticipation and disappointment for players. While the update signifies a step closer to finalization, it also comes with the unfortunate news that the recently introduced peer-to-peer multiplayer feature has been temporarily shelved. Developer Mojang has made the decision to withdraw this work-in-progress functionality, citing that it does not meet their standards in its current iteration.

Just a fortnight ago, Snapshot 7 unveiled a new realm of multiplayer connectivity, complete with a friends list that enhanced the gaming experience for many. Although Minecraft Bedrock is often praised for its accessibility, the original Java version continues to captivate a dedicated audience, particularly due to its robust modding capabilities. The introduction of peer-to-peer multiplayer was seen as a significant improvement, easing the long-standing challenge of coordinating play sessions with friends.

However, Mojang has stated, “With this pre-release, we are removing the peer-to-peer connection feature introduced in a recent snapshot. Because the experience wasn’t what we wanted it to be for all players, we do not consider the feature ready for release in its current form.” For now, players will need to revert to traditional methods of forming groups, but the good news is that other aspects of the friends list, such as adding and chatting with fellow players, remain unaffected.

The 26.2 pre-release 1 build also brings some noteworthy adjustments. Among these are unique hit and push sounds for each variant of the new Sulfur Cube, alongside updates to the model and texture of small Sulfur Cubes. Additionally, the maximum growth length of Sulfur Spikes has been curtailed, and the fog color in the Sulfur Caves biome has undergone a subtle change. Players will now require a source Lava block to create a continuous geyser with Potent Sulfur.

In a move to enhance player interaction, Mojang has separated server properties that govern what is considered ‘spam’ in chat from those regulating command usage. This change allows players to communicate more freely without the fear of being auto-kicked for excessive command entries.

Minecraft Java Edition 26.2 pre-release 1 is now live. For those eager to participate in the testing phase, simply enable snapshots through the Minecraft Launcher found in the ‘Installations’ tab. As always, players are reminded to back up their main worlds before transitioning to the pre-release build.
