Minecraft’s new, free inventory-expanding backpack has been eating players’ loot

Your Minecraft inventory can fill up rather quickly once you start exploring, so having a bit more space at your disposal is a welcome boon. Traditionally, players have turned to mods to expand their inventory, but this week, Mojang introduced an enticing new addition to the Minecraft Marketplace that is hard to overlook.

The Herschel Backpack Trials Add-On

The Herschel Backpack Trials add-on, a collaboration with the renowned brand Herschel, is available for free and promises to enhance your gameplay significantly. Once fully upgraded, players can enjoy a remarkable 16 pages of space, totaling 384 slots. However, some users have encountered an unexpected hiccup: upon logging back into their worlds, they find their backpacks mysteriously empty.

This new add-on not only includes a digital version of the backpack but also coincides with the release of a real-world counterpart, which quickly sold out. The in-game version can be easily acquired from the Minecraft Marketplace, where it comes with a series of challenges designed to gradually increase the capacity of your bag. Alongside this expansion, players can also unlock useful features such as automatic sorting, depositing, restocking, smelting, and even a handy lantern.

Moreover, the backpack includes a soul-bound feature, ensuring that it remains with you even if your adventures take a perilous turn. Unfortunately, reports have surfaced from players who, after logging out and returning, discovered that the items they had stored in their backpacks had vanished. One user recounted their experience: “I tried to repeat this by loading the pack up with stuff, exiting the game, and entering again, and once again, the pack items were gone.”

Several other players have echoed similar frustrations, with one lamenting, “I had been mining for five hours.” Another noted that the issue persisted even with the soul bond upgrade enabled. The original poster has submitted a bug report through Mojang’s support system, which remains marked as ‘unresolved’ at the time of writing.

While the number of reports regarding this issue is relatively low, the backpack add-on has garnered an impressive 4.5-star rating on the Minecraft Marketplace. This suggests that the problem may only be affecting a small subset of players. Nonetheless, the prospect of losing a significant amount of hard-earned items can be disheartening.

As Mojang has been actively promoting the Herschel Backpack add-on through its main channels, it is likely that this bug will receive prompt attention. In the meantime, players may want to exercise caution and ensure their backpacks are emptied before logging off for the day.
