Monster Hunter Wilds PC performance will continue to get updates beyond winter as Capcom ‘proceeds with caution’

The director of Monster Hunter Wilds, Yuya Tokuda, has reached out to the PC gaming community, announcing that performance updates are on the horizon for winter and beyond. Since its launch in February, the game has faced scrutiny from players who have reported subpar performance, even on high-end systems, leading to a less than optimal gaming experience.

Upcoming Improvements

In a recent post detailing the forthcoming version 1.021 update, Tokuda outlined the challenges associated with enhancing the game’s performance. He highlighted the strides made in Title Update 2, which was released on June 30. This update addressed several critical issues:

  • Bugs related to shader compilation were fixed.
  • The impact of anti-cheat measures on processing load was reduced by approximately 90%.
  • Support for the latest super-resolution technologies, DLSS4 and FSR4, was implemented to alleviate CPU load while boosting frame rates.
  • Texture loading processes were improved, minimizing instances where low-quality textures appeared when monsters entered the player’s view.

Looking ahead, Title Update 3, expected by the end of September, aims to deliver similar enhancements for NPCs and Seikret mounts, further refining the gaming experience.

Despite these improvements, concerns linger regarding CPU strain during gameplay. Tokuda acknowledged these worries, particularly for players using CPUs with known stability issues. He emphasized the delicate balance required when making adjustments to CPU processing, as changes could inadvertently worsen overall performance. “We plan to proceed with caution,” he stated, assuring players that the team is committed to addressing CPU load reduction in the fourth title update scheduled for winter. Following this, a second phase of mitigation measures will be implemented.

Additionally, Tokuda mentioned that GPU load reduction will also be approached with similar care, reinforcing the team’s dedication to enhancing the game’s stability. “We will continue to work on improving the game’s stability so that more players can enjoy the game on PC with peace of mind,” he added, expressing gratitude for the community’s understanding.

Critics have not held back in their assessments of Monster Hunter Wilds’ performance. Digital Foundry’s Alex Battaglia notably remarked on the game’s “profound performance problems,” questioning the efficiency of its execution even in less demanding environments. “I find this game’s basic performance, even in its sparse last-generation world, extremely questionable,” he noted, highlighting a disconnect between visual fidelity and performance.
