A mother from Maine has initiated legal proceedings against prominent video game developers, asserting that their games have led to her 9-year-old child developing an addiction. The lawsuit specifically targets industry giants such as Microsoft, along with the creators of widely popular titles like Roblox, Fortnite, and Minecraft. The claim highlights concerns that these games are marketed towards young audiences, incorporating features that are inherently designed to be addictive.
Allegations of Psychological Manipulation
Attorney Brett Dwight Baber, who is representing the plaintiff, Casey Henderson, emphasized the importance of holding these manufacturers accountable for their practices. The lawsuit contends that the games have resulted in significant negative impacts on the child’s life, including:
- Diminished social interactions
- A lack of interest in other hobbies
- Withdrawal symptoms, such as rage, anger, and physical outbursts
The complaint elaborates on the severity of the situation, stating that any attempts to limit the child’s gaming time are met with intense withdrawal symptoms, which include anger and a refusal to maintain proper hygiene or sleep. Baber remarked, “They’ve intentionally built these psychological devices into their games to get kids playing constantly. The more the better. And they profit off it, and this is a billion-dollar industry with a capital B.”
The lawsuit seeks monetary relief, asserting that the plaintiff continues to endure injuries and damages that exceed ,000. As of now, none of the defendants named in the lawsuit have responded to requests for comment.
