This exciting development, however, comes with a caveat: players will need to ensure they possess a compatible disc drive model.
Direct Launch from Disc Drive
The RPCS3 team expressed their enthusiasm, stating,
“Now you can play your PS3 games on PC… DIRECTLY FROM THE DISC DRIVE! Plug and play! Having games on physical media allows you to launch projects released even 20 years ago — without relying on any servers!”
This innovative capability was made possible through the contributions of developers digant73 and Megamouse. Their efforts have expanded the emulator’s functionality, allowing for a more seamless gaming experience.
Previously, direct disc drive launch support was limited to Windows users, but recent updates have broadened accessibility to include Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD platforms. Additionally, the installation process for packages directly from the disc drive has been optimized, enhancing user convenience.
The RPCS3 team has also published a list of compatible disc drives, guiding players in their quest to enjoy their favorite PS3 titles on PC. Meanwhile, the tech community continues to explore the potential of PlayStation 5 emulators, with reports indicating that Grand Theft Auto V is already quite playable.
