In a poignant turn of events, Vela Games has announced the impending closure of its fantasy PvE roguelike title, Evercore Heroes Ascension, just a month after its full release from Early Access. The developer shared this news via Steam, marking the end of the journey for the game set in the vibrant world of Lumerea. Despite exploring various options, including the potential transition to peer-to-peer servers to sustain gameplay, Vela concluded that maintaining the game was no longer feasible.
Development Journey and Challenges
Throughout its development, Evercore Heroes Ascension underwent significant transformations, shifting from its original concept that blended MOBA and MMO elements to a more traditional co-op roguelike format. While the game initially generated considerable excitement, it struggled to maintain player engagement during its early access phase, even after its substantial redesign.
The launch of the 1.0 version last month raised eyebrows when Vela decided to eliminate matchmaking and multiplayer features altogether. What was once envisioned as a fully cooperative experience was reduced to a solitary adventure, leaving players to navigate dungeons alone. Although there are successful single-player titles that thrive without multiplayer components—such as the acclaimed Hades 2—the shift left many fans disappointed, as the social aspect they anticipated was stripped away. Currently, Evercore Heroes Ascension holds a ‘Mostly Negative’ rating on Steam, reflecting the community’s sentiments.
In a statement, Vela expressed their initial optimism: “We came into launch with strong momentum and a lot of excitement, but the early reviews and reception hit us harder than expected, and we were never able to recover from that. With a small team and limited resources, we pushed as long as we could, but it eventually became clear we couldn’t keep the game sustainable.”
The servers for Evercore Heroes Ascension will officially shut down on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at 4 AM PT / 7 AM ET / 11 AM GMT.
A Personal Reflection
The closure of Evercore Heroes Ascension resonates deeply, particularly for those who have followed its evolution since its inception. Nearly five years ago, I had the opportunity to interview Travis George, a former Riot Games developer, about what was then known as Project-V. My nerves were palpable, but George’s kindness and vision for a competitive PvE game that aimed to combat toxicity left a lasting impression. As I later experienced the game firsthand before its rebranding and genre shift, I held onto hope that Vela’s refined focus would yield success. Unfortunately, it appears that the challenges proved insurmountable.
Despite the outcome, Vela remains proud of their creation, stating, “We’re grateful to everyone who played, shared feedback, stuck with us, and believed in what we were trying to do. The community may have been small, but it was passionate – and that meant a lot to us.”
While this chapter closes for Evercore Heroes Ascension, the gaming landscape is rich with multiplayer experiences waiting to be explored. For those seeking competitive gameplay, a variety of engaging MOBAs are readily available to satisfy that craving.
