Excitement Surrounds 1666: Amsterdam Amid AI Controversy
During the recent Summer Game Fest, anticipation surged for 1666: Amsterdam, a project led by the renowned Assassin’s Creed creator, Patrice Desilets. The narrative teaser, steeped in themes of witches, cats, and supernatural intrigue, captivated audiences despite the absence of gameplay footage, effectively establishing a compelling atmosphere.
However, as many had speculated, the excitement was tempered by the revelation that some of the game’s visuals were generated using artificial intelligence. This disclosure prompted a wave of reactions from the gaming community, as players began to scrutinize the teaser for signs of AI involvement.
In a candid statement on Reddit, the studio, Panache, acknowledged the concerns raised by fans. They confirmed that a portion of the marketing and game assets indeed utilized generative AI. “A number of people have raised questions or concerns to us about whether assets in our marketing and game use generative AI,” the studio explained. “We have a dedicated team of over a dozen talented and experienced artists. With them, we looked into the assets in question and found that there were indeed some early versions of assets that made their way into the prologue. This includes some in-game portraits and external marketing assets.”
Panache assured players that they are actively reviewing the questionable assets and that human-created versions will be included in an upcoming update. “We own up to this oversight and apologize for any upset caused. Please be assured that the Early Access and full game will not include any assets generated by AI,” they stated.
This incident reflects a growing trend in the gaming industry, particularly during major events like Summer Game Fest, where the use of AI in game development is becoming increasingly common. The cycle often involves gamers expressing their discontent, developers issuing apologies, and the practice continuing unabated, leaving players to navigate the murky waters of AI-generated content in trailers and gameplay.
As for 1666: Amsterdam, its aesthetic appeal remains undeniable. Yet, the integration of generative AI raises questions about the essence of artistic creation in gaming. While some may still find excitement in the project, others may feel their enthusiasm has been somewhat diminished by the revelation of AI’s role in its development.
