For seasoned players of Rainbow Six Siege, the introduction of Dual Front—a new permanent 6v6 mode—may initially evoke skepticism. This innovative gameplay format, developed over several years as part of Siege X, marks a significant evolution in the tactical first-person shooter as it celebrates its 10th anniversary. Unlike typical event modes, Dual Front redefines the established Bomb format by expanding the lobby size, allowing respawns, and intriguingly permitting attackers and defenders to collaborate on the same team.
New Mechanics and Strategies
Ubisoft has integrated several catch-up mechanics to enhance gameplay dynamics. One notable feature is the “destabilization” of zones that remain uncaptured for extended periods. As a zone destabilizes, the capture bar fills at an accelerated rate, transforming the capture process from a standard 90 seconds to an instantaneous action once fully destabilized. This mechanic adds an unexpected layer of urgency to matches, compelling teams to strategize around zone control.
Additionally, a secondary objective emerges in the neutral zone midway through the match, offering teams a tactical shortcut. For instance, in my recent matches, we were tasked with escorting a hostage, which contributed to the progression of capturing the enemy zone. This element not only diversifies the gameplay but also encourages collaboration among teammates.
Surprisingly, the blending of attackers and defenders feels less jarring than anticipated. While certain team compositions may prove to be overpowered, my experience involved experimenting with operators outside their conventional roles. I relished the opportunity to support my team as Doc, administering healing from a secure vantage point. Conversely, I fell victim to a clever attack by Kapkan, who infiltrated our zone and set traps at our entrances. Such encounters underscore the versatility of many operators, prompting a reflection on whether the traditional roles of attacker and defender still hold significant weight.
Ubisoft has confirmed that Dual Front will be a permanent fixture in the game, set to debut in Year 10 Season 2. While future seasons will introduce updates to the singular map and refresh the operator roster, the classic 5v5 Bomb format will continue to be the cornerstone of Ubisoft’s strategic focus.
