In 2023, industry icon Shinji Mikami embarked on a new venture by establishing Unbound, marking his third foray into studio creation following the founding of PlatinumGames in 2007 and Tango Gameworks in 2010. Mikami’s illustrious career also includes pivotal roles at Capcom, where he led the renowned Production Studio 4 and later Clover Studios.
Shift Up’s Strategic Acquisition
Recently, Unbound garnered attention with the launch of its website, which provided minimal details regarding its inaugural project. This intrigue quickly attracted the interest of Shift Up, a prominent Korean publisher recognized in the West for its title, Stellar Blade. In a significant move, Shift Up announced the complete acquisition of Unbound, purchasing all shares of the studio.
During a recent presentation, Mikami shared his philosophy on creativity, stating, “I believe in openness fostering creativity, even if I get joked with a lot.” Behind him, a striking humanoid-demon figure with wings added an intriguing visual element to his message. Mikami also reiterated a core principle of his career: the importance of nurturing young talent, a commitment he has demonstrated throughout his journey, from mentoring Hideki Kamiya at Capcom to guiding John Johanas and Kenji Kimura at Tango Gameworks.
“We’re going to create a masterpiece of a game,” Mikami confidently declared. With a legacy that includes the creation of Resident Evil and directing the critically acclaimed Resident Evil 4, his words carry significant weight within the gaming community.
Unbound’s Growth and Vision
Currently, Unbound boasts a team of approximately 50 staff members, and the studio is actively expanding its workforce in preparation for its upcoming project, which appears to be progressing more rapidly than anticipated. “I’ve come to see my vision and ideals more clearly,” Mikami remarked. “I don’t think I’ve ever been in a situation where, as a creator, our wavelengths and direction align this closely.” He expressed enthusiasm about being fully involved on-site for this large-scale game, emphasizing his eagerness for the creative process ahead.
As the presentation concluded, a captivating shot revealed Mikami and a colleague gazing over a skyline populated by an unsettling number of birds, followed by an image of a colossal entity composed of numerous wings hovering over a desolate cityscape. Mikami addressed the gaming community directly, saying, “To all the gamers waiting for this, I hope you can wait just a little longer for its release. That’s how I feel.”
