Still hoping that Sony will give up on its PSN account requirement for PC games? Think again, as its president says it exists in the name of safety
Sony’s Commitment to PSN Requirement Remains Firm
Despite widespread discontent among gamers, Sony has reaffirmed its commitment to the PlayStation Network (PSN) requirement for PC titles. This decision comes in the wake of a public relations challenge earlier this year when the company mandated that players of Helldivers 2 connect to a PSN account, a move that was met with considerable backlash. Although Sony promptly retracted this decision, the PSN requirement has persisted in subsequent releases, including the remastered version of Horizon Zero Dawn, which is a single-player game.
The ongoing inclusion of this requirement has led to mixed reviews for several of Sony’s flagship titles on Steam. Nevertheless, during a recent investors call, Sony President Hiroki Totoki provided insight into the rationale behind this policy. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a safe and enjoyable gaming environment, particularly for live service games.
“We have learned a lot,” Totoki stated, acknowledging the challenges associated with integrating PlayStation accounts into the PC gaming landscape. He elaborated that while the requirement may invite some pushback, it is essential for ensuring that players can enjoy their gaming experience without disruption.
“Having some restrictions—though we may not call it a rule—is crucial,” he continued. “We ask users and gamers to follow certain guidelines, as achieving a balance is very important. We must continue to seek the best way to accomplish this.”
As noted by PC Gamer, Totoki’s comments, translated live during the call, suggest that the PSN requirement is not going anywhere. This stance is likely to frustrate many players, especially those in regions where establishing a PSN account is not feasible, despite the availability of Steam.
For those who can create an account but choose not to, it appears that Sony is content to wait, confident in its ability to weather any discontent. The company seems poised to maintain its course, regardless of the prevailing sentiments among its gaming community.
