Subnautica 2 devs say it’s ‘an exploration game first,’ expanding on the first game’s ‘masterclass’ in designing player-driven discovery

In the realm of gaming, the Subnautica series has carved a niche for itself, prominently displaying the “Survival” tag on platforms like Steam. This classification stems from elements such as resource gathering, crafting, and the ever-looming threat of drowning in a perilous underwater environment. However, in a recent conversation with PC Gamer, the developers of Subnautica 2 offered a fresh perspective on this categorization.

Anthony Gallegos, the lead gameplay designer for Subnautica 2, shared insights into the game’s core philosophy. “We often talk about Subnautica being a survival game when we’re speaking publicly,” he explained. “But internally, we often focus on the fact that it’s really an exploration game first, and the survival mechanics operate as something to support exploration.”

Gallegos articulated that the survival elements serve as a framework rather than the primary focus. They provide players with structure and momentum, encouraging them to delve into the depths of the ocean and uncover the mysteries of alien ruins and the formidable leviathans that inhabit these waters. With the upcoming release of Subnautica 2, Unknown Worlds aims to refine these survival systems while preserving the emphasis on exploration that has become synonymous with the franchise.

As anticipation builds for the early access launch on May 14, players can look forward to a game that promises to balance the thrill of survival with the joy of discovery in an expansive underwater world.
