The Blood of Dawnwalker sequel may not have the divisive time mechanic that so many players dislike: ‘We will not force it,’ game director says

The Time Dilemma in The Blood of Dawnwalker

The Blood of Dawnwalker has garnered attention as a remarkable RPG, yet it presents a nuanced challenge that has sparked mixed feelings among players: the concept of time as a limited resource. This mechanic, while intended to instill a sense of urgency, has left some players yearning for a more leisurely experience. Shaun Prescott, our Australian editor, noted that while the time constraint added excitement in the early stages, he also craved moments to engage in leisurely activities, such as gathering nirnroot or enjoying a game of Gwent.

This sentiment is echoed by many in the gaming community, leading to the emergence of the “Better Story Timer” mod. This modification effectively neutralizes the pressure of the ticking clock, quickly becoming the most popular mod on Nexus Mods for Dawnwalker. In response to this trend, Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, the studio CEO and game director, acknowledged the feedback regarding the time mechanic and its potential impact on the upcoming sequel.

“We will play with it,” Tomaszkiewicz remarked. “If we have parts of the story, or the whole story, where it fits, we will use it. However, we won’t force it into every scenario. Our goal is to enhance the urgency of certain events without compromising the overall experience.”

He also recognized the complaints surrounding the time mechanic but encouraged players to experience Dawnwalker with the clock running before opting for modifications. “We balanced Dawnwalker so that players can complete around 80 percent of the content even with the time mechanic in place,” he explained. “It’s not as restrictive as some might think.”

The notion of time constraints in video games is not a novel concept. Titles like The Witcher 2 and Obsidian’s Pentiment have successfully integrated similar mechanics, prompting players to make impactful choices that can lead to missed experiences. This element of choice, while sometimes frustrating, is often what players seek in their gaming adventures.

Interestingly, Tomaszkiewicz noted a decline in complaints regarding the time mechanic as players have completed the game. Many have discovered that they had more time than anticipated, a trend he expects to continue as more players finish their journeys. “There will always be those who dislike time mechanics entirely, and that’s perfectly fine,” he stated. “They have the option to download the mod and play at their own pace.”

As Rebel Wolves looks to the future, the studio is already on the hunt for a lead writer to help shape the next chapter in the Dawnwalker saga, signaling their commitment to evolving the narrative while considering player feedback.
