The Elder Scrolls Online’s devs are pushing through hard times after layoffs and delays: ‘We didn’t want to rush to just hit a date’

In the ever-evolving landscape of massively multiplayer online games (MMOs), the journey of The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) has recently taken a tumultuous turn. The development team at Zenimax Online has faced significant challenges over the past couple of years, marked by a series of unfortunate events that have reshaped the studio’s trajectory.

The turmoil began in July 2025 with the cancellation of Project Blackbird, a decision that resulted in the layoff of 62 employees. This setback was compounded in July of this year when Xbox’s restructuring efforts led to a staggering reduction of 213 positions at Zenimax Online. In total, the studio’s workforce has shrunk by approximately 60% within a single year, a stark reality that has left many in the industry reeling.

Despite these setbacks, there was a glimmer of hope earlier this year when the development team expressed optimism about the future of ESO. In conversations held in January, they shared plans for refreshing animations, introducing a new seasonal structure, and experimenting with innovative gameplay mechanics. However, the subsequent layoffs and restructuring in 2026 cast a long shadow over these aspirations, leaving both the team and the community bewildered and disheartened.

In a letter to the community released in July, the studio reiterated its commitment to the game while acknowledging the necessity of postponing several updates until 2027. “With what happened,” said Giacomini, a representative from the development team, “that required us to take a look at schedules, see what’s possible, and things needed to shift. One of the underlying principles with that was that we didn’t want to rush to just hit a date.” This thoughtful approach reflects a desire to maintain quality over mere deadlines, a sentiment that resonates deeply with dedicated players.

Resilience Amidst Challenges

While the recent upheavals have undeniably impacted Zenimax Online, the studio remains steadfast in its efforts to sustain ESO. The MMO genre itself is currently facing its own set of challenges, and the hope is that ESO can regain its footing without further disruptions. As the community watches closely, there is a collective yearning for the game to emerge from this period of uncertainty and thrive once more.
