As of tonight, Warren Spector’s studio proudly unveils one of the industry’s most ambitious gaming concepts: a four-player multiplayer experience titled Thick as Thieves. Set to launch in 2026, this PvPvE first-person stealth game promises to redefine competitive gameplay. The creators at OtherSide Entertainment shared insights into their innovative approach just a day before the official announcement at The Game Awards, reflecting on lessons learned from past endeavors.

Learning from the Past

The team acknowledges the challenges faced by previous titles like Hood: Outlaws & Legends, which struggled to capture the essence of multiplayer stealth, and Deceive Inc., a unique spy-themed shooter that recently shuttered its doors. Warren Spector, the studio director, emphasizes a crucial distinction: “This is a game about competition, not about combat.”

In a candid discussion, the Thick as Thieves team explored why Deceive Inc. failed to resonate with players. “It’s fundamentally a shooter,” noted McDonough, “where success hinges primarily on combat skills. The variability between missions was less than what we envision for Thick as Thieves.” He elaborated that the game often devolved into a battle royale scenario, lacking the depth and differentiation needed to stand out in a crowded market.

A New Direction

With a clear vision, the team is determined to carve out a unique identity for Thick as Thieves. “We’ve embarked on a different trajectory from the very beginning; we don’t want to be perceived as just another shooter,” McDonough stated. Spector reinforced this sentiment, highlighting the game’s focus on competition rather than direct combat. “While combat is an option, it’s designed to support a variety of play styles and player choices.”

The development team is tackling complex design challenges to create an unpredictable, dynamic world. “When it works, it’s pretty magical,” remarked LoPiccolo. “Detailed scenarios unfold with reversals and surprises that feel scripted, yet emerge organically.”

Expanding Gameplay Possibilities

OtherSide aims to engage players with a broader array of actions beyond simply defeating opponents. “Players can ambush, stalk, hunt, or even knock out other thieves to eliminate competition or steal their loot,” McDonough explained. “The environment plays a critical role; you can manipulate it to your advantage, using guards to thwart rivals or locking them out of rooms.”

This multifaceted approach allows for diverse gameplay styles, where one player might storm in, create chaos, and escape through a window, while another quietly observes from the rafters, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Both strategies are equally valid and will compete in a richly woven tapestry of player interactions.
